The eye's filter against light is consumable, and the body cannot manufacture it.

The macula concentrates dietary carotenoids into a pigment that absorbs short-wavelength light before it reaches the photoreceptors — a defense that is spent rather than damaged, and restored only from intake. The retina's microvasculature is held to the same account, because perfusion failure and pigment loss degrade vision by routes with nothing in common, and an eye can be losing ground on one while the other still reads normal.

Most of what people want from their eyes is daily rather than diagnostic. Eased focusing strain, eased screen fatigue and eased dry, tired eyes are the near field; built macular pigment is that filter accumulating where it is needed, and protected light-sensing cells with vitamin A signaling are what the pigment is protecting. Lens clarity, eye pressure, the optic nerve and visual perception extend it, and because sight carries balance, balance and falls and hearing sit on the same account — with young eyes included, where the demand starts earliest.

Three primary pathways of the sixteen it targets. A pathway opens only on graded, published evidence, shown with its source at the ingredient level.

The story of Ocular (Retinal & Macular Support)

Ocular — ‘The Lens’ — for the fine instrument you were never handed a manual for. You were issued one of the finest optical instruments on earth and never given the manual. Here it is, in brief. At the front, a film of tears in three layers keeps the surface clear, and a dry eye is often, strangely, a watering one. Behind it sits a lens held in focus by a ring of muscle that tightens every time you read, and stays tight for as long as you keep reading. Distance is its resting state. Everything close is work. At the back is the part that turns light into sight: a thin sheet of light-sensing cells, renewed a little every day, and the cables that carry their signal to the brain. At the very center of that sheet lies a small, dense patch responsible for everything sharp you see, every face, every word on this page. It is shielded by a yellow pigment filter that your body cannot make for itself and has to take from food. With the years, that center of the picture can begin to fade, first as a smudge, then as a gap (macular degeneration). Years of high blood sugar do a different damage, to the smallest vessels feeding the retina, which leak and bleed and are replaced by fragile new ones (diabetic retinopathy). Neither hurts. Both are silent until they are not. An instrument depends on every one of its parts, and the part most people neglect is the one they cannot see: the sensing sheet at the back and the vessels that feed it (ocular health). Ocular is built for the back of the eye. It restocks the pigment filter the body cannot make, protects the light-sensing cells and their cables from the oxidants that bright light generates, and supports the tiny vessels that keep some of the most demanding tissue in the body supplied. Most of what people want from their eyes is daily rather than diagnostic. Eased focusing strain and eased screen fatigue are the near field — the hours that stop costing something. Built pigment is that filter accumulating where it is needed, and vitamin A signaling is what the light-sensing cells run on once the light gets through; visual perception is the whole of it assembled. And because vision carries balance, balance and falls sit on the same account, with hearing beside them — the two senses that decide, more than any others, whether a person keeps moving through the world or begins negotiating with it. Of all the senses, sight is the one people fear losing most. Ocular keeps it in focus.

Full formula — 43 ingredients by evidence grade
5 Human trial evidence19 Corroborated19 Preclinical
The studies, ingredient by ingredient
Grade AHuman trial evidence
Randomized human trials, or a meta-analysis of them, measuring this pathway's own endpoint — either a clinical outcome or a validated biomarker.

Lutein settles in the macula as a yellow screen against blue light, eases the ciliary strain of close work, and slows the young eye's drift to nearsight.

AZeaxanthinstudies ↗︎

Concentrates in the central fovea, deepening the pigment shield and steadying focus at the screen.

In 100 adults over fifty with early macular degeneration, crossed over against placebo, acuity and the retina's response improved.

AQiMing granule

A classical formula of astragalus, pueraria and rehmannia that steadies the retina's fine capillaries once sugar has frayed them.

AAstragalusstudies ↗︎

Astragaloside IV shores up the retina's finest vessels, curbing the leakage high glucose provokes.

Grade B+Corroborated
Human data, or animal evidence replicated by an independent laboratory. It opens a pathway only alongside an independent corroborating driver.
B+Crocetin

Short-sighted children's eyes grew longer more slowly on crocetin: 0.18 millimeters over twenty-four weeks against 0.21 on placebo, with refraction drifting 0.33 dioptres against 0.41. Sixty-seven children, half a year, and differences that are real and narrow at once.

B+Erigeron breviscapusstudies ↗︎

A Yunnan fleabane whose breviscapine widens the small vessels feeding the optic nerve, easing the pressure-driven wear on its delicate fibers.

B+Blackcurrantstudies ↗︎

Blackcurrant anthocyanins relax the eye's focusing muscle after hours at a screen and feed the optic nerve richer circulation, sparing it the grind of pressure.

B+Nicotinamidestudies ↗︎

Aging nerve cells behind the eye run short of NAD — nicotinamide refills it, so the optic nerve's mitochondria hold their power under pressure.

B+Palmitoylethanolamide

PEA, a fat the body makes to quiet irritated tissue, eases the pressure inside the eye and calms the glial cells crowding the optic nerve.

B+Forskolinstudies ↗︎

From the coleus root: forskolin raises cAMP in the eye's fluid-making tissue, slowing production so pressure on the optic nerve falls.

B+Sea Buckthorn

Sea buckthorn's rare palmitoleic oil enriches the lipid layer that seals each tear, so the eye's surface stays wet between blinks and the grit fades.

B+Maqui berrystudies ↗︎

Maqui's delphinidins prompt the tear glands to keep secreting as they age, restoring the watery film that cushions a dry, stinging surface.

B+Bilberrystudies ↗︎

In 109 adults over twelve weeks, instrument-measured focus recovered from near work far better than placebo.

B+Astaxanthinstudies ↗︎

In 64 screen-heavy children over twelve weeks, eye strain fell 20% and visual fatigue 27% below placebo.

B+Goji Berrystudies ↗︎

Goji's zeaxanthin dipalmitate is among the richest dietary sources of the pigment, and it banks in the macula as a filter against glare.

B+Red sagestudies ↗︎

Red sage root, danshen, carries salvianolic acids that keep retinal capillaries open and their walls intact against sugar-driven damage.

B+Notoginsengstudies ↗︎

Tianqi, the notoginseng root, lends saponins that steady blood flow through the retina and seal the micro-vessels against bleeding.

Ginkgo's terpene lactones widen blood flow to the optic nerve head and guard its cells when pressure bears on them, protecting the field of sight.

B+Citicoline

The optic nerve is wrapped in phospholipid membrane; citicoline supplies the choline to rebuild it and restores dopamine along the visual path.

B+Vitamin Cstudies ↗︎

With zinc alongside, the odds of reaching advanced macular disease fell about a quarter over six years; in already-healthy eyes vitamin C moved nothing.

B+Vitamin Estudies ↗︎

In eyes already showing early macular change, antioxidants with zinc cut the six-year odds of advanced disease and of vision loss by about a quarter each.

Paired with antioxidants, cuts the odds of progressing to advanced macular degeneration by about a quarter over six years, and of losing a block of reading acuity by the same.

Paired with zinc in the landmark macular trial's effective arm: about a quarter less progression over six years.

Grade BPreclinical
Mechanistic, cell or animal evidence. No single preclinical driver opens a pathway on its own.
BBoswellia carterii

Frankincense resin whose boswellic acids restrain the inflammation clouding the lens, helping its proteins stay ordered and clear.

BSulforaphanestudies ↗︎

The haze that clouds vision months after cataract surgery is lens cells creeping back across the membrane they were cleared from.

BFerulic acidstudies ↗︎

Ferulic acid quenches the oxidants that fold lens proteins into haze — a grain-bran phenolic that guards the transparency of the eye's lens.

Indian gooseberry carries beta-glucogallin, which blocks aldose reductase, the enzyme that floods the lens with sorbitol and clouds its clarity.

Bbeta-Glucogallin

Isolated from amla, beta-glucogallin is a selective brake on the sugar-to-sorbitol enzyme within the lens, so its fibers keep their glass.

Turmeric's golden pigment raises glutathione inside lens cells and blunts the sugar-bonding that yellows and fogs the lens with age.

BAronia melanocarpastudies ↗︎

Aronia's cyanidin, among the darkest berry pigments known, shields rods and cones from light-induced oxidation so they survive bright days.

BBlack goji berrystudies ↗︎

The black wolfberry of the Qinghai desert — its anthocyanins protect retinal ganglion cells and the optic nerve fibers that carry sight to the brain.

BEpigallocatechin gallatestudies ↗︎

Green tea's EGCG crosses into the retina to guard ganglion cells from oxidative loss, preserving the optic nerve and the edges of the visual field.

BCistanche tubulosastudies ↗︎

Echinacoside, the desert-parasite's signature glycoside, protects the neurons whose long axons form the optic nerve, holding the field of view intact.

BLigustrazinestudies ↗︎

Ligustrazine, drawn from Szechuan lovage, loosens sticky platelets and dilates the retina's capillaries, so oxygen reaches its outer layers.

BFallopia japonicastudies ↗︎

The retinal-vessel work in hand was done with purified resveratrol, the stilbene this plant supplies, rather than with a knotweed extract: it wakes the sirtuin enzymes and cools the inflamed capillary lining.

BGlycyrrhiza uralensisstudies ↗︎

Licorice root's glycyrrhizin silences a danger signal that inflames and leaks the retina's small vessels under metabolic strain.

BOmega-3 EPA/DHAstudies ↗︎

EPA and DHA temper the inflammation at the eye's surface and thicken the oily meibum, holding the tear film together through the day.

BDendrobium (syringic acid)studies ↗︎

Syringic acid from dendrobium stem blocks the aldose reductase enzyme and protects its proteins, so the lens stays clear.

BPole butterflybushstudies ↗︎

Mi meng hua, the butterfly bush flower of Chinese eye formulas — its acteoside shields photoreceptors from the oxidative burn of strong light.

BPole butterflybush

The flavonoids of Buddleja, luteolin among them, curb oxidation and inflammation in the lens epithelium so its protein stays clear.

BCistanche extractstudies ↗︎

Cistanche's phenylethanoid glycosides hold rods and cones alive under intense light, preserving the cells that turn photons into sight.

BTetramethylpyrazinestudies ↗︎

Tetramethylpyrazine blocks the calcium flood that kills light-stressed photoreceptors, keeping the outer retina's cell layer intact.
