Executive function is a federation of capacities, each able to fail on its own.
Attention alone divides into sustaining it, selecting from competing input and splitting it between tasks, over the alertness beneath all three — and against its opposite, the wandering a resting network produces when attention lapses (sustained, selective and divided attention, complex attention, alertness, mind wandering, default mode network). The core is narrower: holding material in mind while working on it, planning a sequence, inhibiting the obvious response, switching set (working memory, planning, inhibition, cognitive flexibility). Around it sit weighing a decision, updating from feedback, and knowing what you do and do not know (decision making, feedback use, metacognition) — all of it costing effort that is itself measurable (cognitive effort).
Language fails in distinct places: retrieving a name, finding a word under time, producing speech and understanding it (naming, word finding, verbal fluency, expressive and receptive language). So does the social layer — reading an expression and inferring another person’s state (emotion recognition, theory of mind, social cognition). Perception and action carry their own: recognizing an object, performing a learned movement, assembling a shape, hand–eye coordination, judging elapsed time, and sensing the body’s own signals (gnosis, praxis, visuoconstruction, perceptual-motor, temporal processing, interoception). Beneath all of it, encoding runs on acetylcholine (ACh), and memory and focus with it, conduction speed on the insulation of the tract (myelin, processing speed), and the ceiling is set by the stress axis (HPA). Acute confusion is the state in which the federation fails at once (delirium).

The story of Autonomous (Executive Command)
Autonomous — ‘The Self-Governed’ — for a mind that runs itself. A clear mind is a government, with departments that have to work together, and when one of them falters the whole state feels it. At the top sits the executive (executive function), the brain’s project manager, deciding what matters now. It plans the steps (planning), stops you acting on every impulse (inhibitory control), and changes gears when the plan has to change (cognitive flexibility). It learns from what just happened (learning from feedback), and it even knows what it knows and what it does not (metacognition). Then the department of attention. Awake enough to think (alertness and arousal). Holding a thread for an hour (sustained attention). Filtering out the noise (selective attention). Doing two things at once (divided attention), and keeping all of it together under pressure (complex attention). Beside them sit the desk where you hold a thought while you use it (working memory), the speed at which the whole office moves (processing speed), and your sense of time itself (temporal processing). Then the department of language (language function): taking words in (receptive language), getting words out (expressive language), how freely speech flows (verbal fluency), putting a name to a thing (naming), and the word on the tip of your tongue that finally arrives (word finding). Then the senses and the hands. Knowing what you are looking at (gnosis, recognition). Building what you see (visuoconstructional ability). Seeing and doing together (perceptual-motor function), and performing a skilled task without having to think it through (praxis). And the social mind: reading a face (emotion recognition), reading a room (social cognition), and knowing what someone else is thinking (theory of mind). Even reading your own body belongs here (interoception). All of it rests on infrastructure. The messenger that carries memory and attention between neurons (the cholinergic system). The insulation that keeps signals fast (myelin). A stress axis calm enough to let the executive think (the HPA axis, cortisol). And when the infrastructure fails suddenly, in illness or after surgery, the whole government can fall into a sudden fog (delirium). Autonomous is built for the whole state. The messenger supplied, the insulation maintained, the stress axis quieted, so every department can do its work. What comes out is what everyone means by a sharp mind (cognition). A federation is only as good as its quietest departments. Decision making under uncertainty, the self-knowledge of what you do and do not know, the timing perception that judges how much time has passed, the spatial construction that assembles a shape, the hand-eye coordination that puts a hand where the eye is looking, the learned movement you no longer rehearse. None of these announce themselves until one of them slips. Nor does the cost of thinking itself, the mental effort a hard hour actually takes, or the idling default network the mind falls into the moment attention lets go. When several fail at once and the whole federation goes dark for an afternoon, that acute confusion is tracked on its own, because it is not forgetfulness and should never be read as it. Underneath, the body is either supplying the brain or taxing it. Blood-sugar support, insulin sensitivity and fasting insulin set the fuel; calmed inflammation, inflammatory signaling and the monocytes it recruits set the tax. Antioxidant defense and the master antioxidant decide what survives the exchange, while quieted overexcitation, mood, motivation and the BDNF signaling that makes learning stick decide what is kept. Muscle, joint comfort, recovery, lowered anxiety, orderly clotting, the kidney, cholesterol, weight and resistance to infection are what a well-governed body holds on to while it does the thinking. A mind that governs itself does not need to be pushed. It needs to be supplied.
