Total and HDL cholesterol
Reads: Lowers cholesterol
You want it balanced: sound lipid metabolism keeps the cardiovascular system in good order.
What this marker reads
The transport and handling of fats, not simply their level. Particle number, size and oxidation state carry more predictive weight than total cholesterol — a distinction the mainstream number obscures.
What a named body publishes
Each line below is the sentence the issuing body wrote, carried with its own identifier. Nothing here interprets your result — it states what was published, for whom, and by whom.

Your laboratory reads your result against its own assay, and this page does not do that for it. What is above is what a named body published and for whom; what is below is the machinery the marker reads and the formulas witnessed on it.
What moves it
Blocks new fat cells raises it.
PPARγ adipocyte review 2018, Front Endocrinol — PPARγ is the master transcriptional regulator of adipogenesis and lipid storage, inducing genes for fatty-acid uptake, storage and lipid metabolism. doi 10.3389/fendo.2018.00473
Energy sensing raises it.
AMPK is the switch between storing fat and burning it: activating AMPK enhances lipid oxidation and reduces incorporation of fatty acids into triacylglycerol, while inhibiting AMPK increases lipid accumulation (PMC5296945). The acute mechanism is phosphorylation of its target acetyl-CoA carboxylase, lowering malonyl-CoA (PMC2734509); the long-term arm is transcriptional — AMPK activation raises PPAR-alpha target genes and PGC-1, and silencing those prevents the increase in fatty-acid oxidation (PMID 16364253). Verbatim: “Activation of AMP-activated kinase (AMPK) in skeletal muscle increases glucose uptake, fatty acid oxidation, and mitochondrial biogenesis by increasing gene expression in these pathways”. doi 10.1073/pnas.0705070104 · PMID 16364253 · PMC5296945
Sleep raises it.

insulin, fasting insulin, type 2 diabetes and blood lipids share one literature: heart, kidney, liver, and metabolic diseases share interlinked pathological mechanisms, including inflammation, oxidative stress, insulin resistance, and endothelial health issues. These four overlap by nature: fasting insulin is the level, insulin is the signaling, type 2 diabetes is the diagnosis and blood lipids are the substrate. The same driver legitimately reaches all four, and a reader should not mistake four arrows for four independent findings. doi 10.1038/s41581-026-01066-0 · PMC11725408

What it moves
It raises Arterial plaque.
Ference 2017, Eur Heart J 38(32):2459-2472 (doi 10.1093/eurheartj/ehx144) -- EAS Consensus Panel appraised over 200 prospective cohorts, Mendelian randomization studies and randomized trials in more than 2 million participants and concluded LDL causes atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and log-linearly with cumulative exposure. Contested: Okuyama 2018, Pharmacology 101(3-4):184-218 (PMID 29353277) is a published critical review disputing that consensus. LDL alone is an incomplete panel. Remnant cholesterol carries causal effect on CAD/MI largely independent of LDL-C, and Lp(a) correlates with lesions more strongly than LDL-C once LDL-C is below 104 mg/dL. doi 10.1093/eurheartj/ehx144 · PMID 29353277

It raises Men's hormone balance.
The finding that unifies all three nodes is that the same androgen does opposite things in different tissues: testosterone acts directly, and indirectly through intracellular conversion to dihydrotestosterone by 5-alpha reductase, as in prostate cells, and separately through estrogen effect when converted to estradiol by aromatase. Raise testosterone and you also raise DHT and estradiol - which is why the same intervention supports male hormonal health and can enlarge the prostate. And the clinical data shows both arms at once: in 183 men over 50 with BPH, testosterone was significantly lower in patients with severe LUTS (285.94 ng/dL) than mild (544.09 ng/dL) - so low testosterone tracks with worse urinary symptoms, while DHT drives the gland. That is not a contradiction to resolve, it is two different molecules. Bidirectionality is explicit: the relationship between hypogonadism and metabolic disorders is bidirectional, and a vicious circle between the two components has been documented. PMC6669361
It raises Inflammatory fat substrate.
Arachidonic acid sits esterified in membrane phospholipid until phospholipase A2 releases it. Carried by the intermediary-metabolism, micronutrient and clinical reviews. doi 10.3390/nu18132141 · PMC9967593
