You want it robust: healthy spermatogenesis reflects sound hormonal and metabolic function.
In depth
Spermatogenesis — the production and quality of sperm, a barometer of male reproductive health.
What drives it
Reproductive axis increases it.
HPG-axis endocrinology review — pituitary FSH, with high intratesticular testosterone, drives Sertoli-cell support of spermatogenesis. PMID 3109367. A precise limit from the primary: in selective gonadotrophin replacement in hypogonadotrophic hypogonadal men, qualitatively normal sperm production was achieved by replacing either LH OR FSH alone -- but both are required to maintain quantitatively normal spermatogenesis. Quality and count are separable endpoints and the axis does not deliver them together. The FSH requirement is greatest during initiation of sperm production at puberty. PMID 3109367
Oxidative stress reduces it.
Sperm are unusually defenceless against oxidation — they carry NO DNA-repair machinery and their membranes are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids. Excess ROS therefore drives lipid peroxidation (reducing membrane fluidity and motility), DNA fragmentation (compromising genetic integrity) and protein oxidation (impairing the ability to fertilise) (PMC11835670, PMC11366688). The damage begins when production outruns the antioxidant defense (PMC11446552). Sperm are unusually vulnerable because protamines replace histones, leaving limited DNA repair. ~10 percent of sperm from fertile men carry DNA damage vs 20-25 percent from infertile men. oxidative stress is one of three routes to sperm DNA fragmentation -- the others are apoptosis during spermatogenesis and faulty PROTAMINE packaging (PI:PII off 1:1). Only the redox route is addressable here. PMC11835670
