The Trial Record is Mixed and this pathway must Carry that: omega-3 moved LDL-C (SMD -9.57) and arthritis pain (SMD -0.29, I-squared 60 percent), but showed mixed efficacy across acne, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and rosacea with reviewers calling for stronger evidence. A bleeding-risk meta-analysis exists in the same literature.

In depth

Long-chain marine fatty acids that become cell membrane. Perceptual speed is the better-graded result, improving with each increment at moderate certainty. No adverse effects were reported across the range studied. Bioavailability ranks nefa > phospholipid > rTAG > tag > ethyl ester — the form on the label matters.

What it drives

It reduces Attention regulation.

All nine included studies reported a negative correlation between vitamin D level and chronic rhinosinusitis; vitamin D deficiency also causes airway hyperresponsiveness. doi 10.7759/cureus.55955 · PMC4002254

It increases Sustained focus.

It increases Joint comfort.

10.3390/nu9010042 — The aging outcome lists the thirteen hallmarks themselves, each mapped to its pathway and labeled with its hallmark number. (from the reviews of this outcome). doi 10.3390/nu9010042

It increases Vision.

Why the retina is the most oxidatively stressed tissue in the body, stated directly: the retina is highly susceptible to oxidative damage due to its elevated oxygen consumption, abundant polyunsaturated fatty acids, and continuous exposure to light. Three risk factors that cannot be separated from its function. And the aging failure is specific and double: in the elderly both the mitophagic process and Nrf2 activation ARE impaired, thus causing retinal cell death. The carotenoid case is unusually mechanical: lutein and zeaxanthin ARE selectively taken up by the RPE, preferentially accumulated in the human macula, and transferred to photoreceptors - a targeted delivery route, not a general antioxidant claim. The Eye Disease Case-Control Study found high plasma levels of lutein and zeaxanthin associated with reduced risk of neovascular AMD. By contrast the reviewers say the relationships between dietary and serum levels of the antioxidant vitamins and age-related macular disease ARE less clear - with alpha-tocopherol the exception, convincingly demonstrated. Lipofuscin is itself a photoreactive substance - the waste product becomes a new damage source (PMC12026614; PMC11274723; PMC6230566; doi 10.3390/antiox14101251; PMID 11033038). REFUTED ON A SECOND READING. This link was shown by linked steps until a source was opened that does not support it: “The hazard ratio (HR) for progression to late AMD comparing lutein/zeaxanthin with no lutein/zeaxanthin was 0.91 (95% CI, 0.84-0.99; P = .02) and comparing omega-3 fatty acids with no omega-3 fatty acids was 1.01 (95% CI, 0.93-1.09; P = .91).” — Long-term Outcomes of Adding Lutein/Zeaxanthin and omega-3 Fatty Acids to the AREDS Supplements on Age-Related Macular Degeneration Progression. JAMA Ophthalmology, 2022, 140(7), 692. doi:10.1001/jamaophthalmol.2022.1640 | PMID 35653117 (openalex records first and last page both as 692). doi 10.3390/antiox14101251 · PMID 11033038 · PMC12026614

It reduces Lipid messengers.

Competitive, not additive - EPA and arachidonic acid use the same enzymes and the products differ in potency, so omega-3 works by displacing omega-6 from the enzyme rather than adding an anti-inflammatory of its own. That is why the ratio matters more than the dose and why effects take months: membrane composition has to change first. Carried by the intermediary-metabolism, micronutrient and clinical reviews. doi 10.3390/nu18132141 · PMC9967593

It reduces Inflammatory fat substrate.

Dietary EPA and DHA displace arachidonate from the membrane pool over months. Carried by the intermediary-metabolism, micronutrient and clinical reviews. doi 10.3390/nu18132141 · PMC9967593

It increases Mood.

Meta-analysis of 26 double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trials including 2,160 participants showed an overall beneficial effect of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids on depression symptoms (SMD = -0.28, P = 0.004). PMID 34932079 · PMC6683166

It reduces Eases dry, tired eyes.

Dry eye is the most common ophthalmic complaint; omega-3 is the most-studied nutritional intervention for it. PMC12608359
