You want it low: these are things arriving from packaging and dust rather than from the plate, and the evidence that matters is developmental — exposure windows before birth and in early childhood.

In depth

Obesogen exposure — endocrine-disrupting chemicals such as bisphenols, phthalates and organotins that alter fat-cell development and lipid storage.

It increases Supports weight management.

The reviewers commit, which is unusual for this field: based on the available data from mechanistic, animal and epidemiological studies including meta-analyses, the weight of evidence points towards the contribution of EDCs to the development of obesity — and they name six mechanisms: impacting adipogenesis; modulating epigenetic pathways during development; influencing neuroendocrine signals responsible for appetite and satiety; promoting a proinflammatory milieu in adipose tissue; dysregulating gut microbiome and immune homeostasis; and inducing dysfunction in thermogenic adipose tissue. The obesogen literature independently named the same holes. The strongest single experiment is developmental, not adult: exposure of pregnant mice to tributyltin produced MULTIPOTENT stromal cells that differentiated preferentially into adipocytes. The stem-cell population was biased toward fat before any fat cell existed — which is a different kind of claim from an adult eating more. And neonatal DIETHYLSTILBESTROL produced long-term weight gain in adulthood in female mice. The human epidemiology is weak and this edge says so. NHANES data on 7,780 adults found combined phthalate-metabolite exposure associated with obesity at an odds ratio of 1.082 (95% CI 1.027 to 1.141) — statistically significant and clinically tiny. These are cross-sectional designs with single-point exposure measurement, which is a poor instrument for a lifetime of intermittent exposure. The animal and mechanistic arms are far stronger than the human observational one, and the gap between them is the honest state of this field. The transgenerational claim is recorded, not endorsed: EDCs even at low doses may promote epigenetic transgenerational inheritance of adult obesity in subsequent generations. The word is may. doi 10.1016/j.ecoenv.2025.118441 · PMC10779569

It increases Blocks new fat cells.

The mechanism at the receptor, which is why this pathway earns a link rather than only an association. PPAR-gamma is the central transcriptional regulator of adipogenesis and a key molecular target of various obesogens. Its activation promotes the genes for lipid metabolism and fat storage. Organotins ARE the cleanest case: they are described as promoting adipocyte differentiation as agonists of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma / retinoid X receptor pathway, and as potent INDUCERS of adipogenesis in vertebrates. Tributyltin also triggers lipogenesis in macrophages via modifying the PPAR-gamma pathway. Phthalate MONOESTERS activate PPAR-alpha and PPAR-gamma directly. And bisphenol A reaches the same receptor epigenetically rather than as a ligand: low-dose BPA acts on adipogenesis by reducing PPAR-gamma promoter methylation in preadipocytes. Two different chemical classes, two different molecular routes, one receptor. And the same BPA paper is honest about what that did not produce: in BPA-exposed 3T3L1 cells, PPAR-gamma expression only transiently increased, without altering the adipogenic potential of the precursor cells — and the authors note contradictory evidence and unanswered questions ARE reported in the literature concerning the BPA effects on adipogenesis. The promoter changed; the cell fate did not necessarily follow. Cell culture and rodent throughout. doi 10.3389/fendo.2026.1782328 · PMC7696502
