Protects insulin cells
β-cell protection

You want it preserved: healthy β-cell function is the foundation of lifelong glucose control.
In depth
The pancreatic cells that make insulin. Their functional reserve, not their number, is what fails first in type 2 diabetes — and reserve is partially recoverable, which is why this pathway exists separately from insulin.
What drives it
Appetite & sugar hormone increases it.
GLP-1/beta-cell review 2013 — GLP-1 (incretin) receptor signaling potentiates glucose-stimulated insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cells via cAMP/PKA/Epac2 (glucose-dependent). PMC3556522
Islet inflammation reduces it.
The lesion itself. Verbatim: 'Over years, immune infiltration into pancreatic islets leads to beta cell damage, impairment of cell function, and destruction of beta cells' (Diabetes in America, NCBI Bookshelf NBK604182). this is the defining mechanism of type 1; it is not the mechanism of type 2, where beta-cell reserve fails without an immune siege.
Coxsackievirus B3 reduces it.
Verbatim: 'CVB can persist in pancreatic ductal and beta-cells, which leads to structural or functional alterations of these cells, and to a chronic inflammatory response that promotes recruitment and activation of pre-existing autoreactive T cells and beta-cell autoimmune destruction' (doi 10.1038/s41574-022-00688-1). Scope and a direct contradiction recorded: a 2025 single-cell study of primary human islets reports 'no evidence of preferential viral tropism for beta and ductal cells... with ductal cells, not beta cells, exhibiting the strongest interferon- and HLA-associated responses'. Beta-cell-selective tropism is contested. doi 10.1038/s41574-022-00688-1
Beta-cell renewal increases it.
New beta cells become beta-cell mass. Verbatim: harmine 'is able to induce beta cell proliferation, increase islet mass and improve glycemic control' across 'three different mouse and human islet in vivo-based models' (PMID 25751815). measured with transplanted human islets in IMMUNODEFICIENT mice - a system with NO autoimmunity. Regeneration in the presence of an ongoing type 1 attack is a different and unsolved problem. PMID 25751815
Pancreatic stellate cells reduces it.
10.3389/fcell.2021.694276 — The exocrine arm reaches the islet. Verbatim: 'Recruitment of other inflammatory cells further exacerbates pancreatic inflammation, leading to destruction of acinar cells and islet cells, which is then replaced by massive fibrosis' (Pancreapedia). And: activated PSCs 'secrete proinflammatory cytokines that may amplify pancreatic inflammation and accelerate the loss of acinar and islet cells' (jci Insight 158288). The evidence covers psc-driven islet loss is a bystander mechanism - the stellate cells are not islet-specific, unlike the autoimmune attack in type 1. doi 10.3389/fcell.2021.694276
Pancreatic inflammation reduces it.
10.1155/2016/4592346 — Verbatim: 'Chronic pancreatitis is a progressive inflammatory disease of the pancreas that is characterized by fibrosis and loss of insulin-producing beta cells' (jci Insight 158288), and 'Destruction of the gland leads to eventual loss of exocrine and endocrine function' (pmc2838384). The evidence covers 'Features of pancreatic insufficiency: late manifestation (after 90% of the pancreatic parenchyma is destroyed)' - the gland hides damage until very late. doi 10.1155/2016/4592346
Beta-cell growth brake reduces it.
DYRK1A is expressed in pancreatic beta-cells, where it phosphorylates NFAT and restrains the proliferation program. PMID 25751815
What it drives
It reduces Blood-sugar support.
Rorsman & Ashcroft 2018, Physiol Rev — the pancreatic β-cell senses glucose (GLUT2/glucokinase, then Ca2+-triggered insulin exocytosis), matching insulin output to blood glucose. PMC5866358
It reduces Type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes never develops unless beta-cells fail to compensate for insulin resistance: a deficit of beta-cell functional mass is an essential component of the pathophysiology, present at diagnosis and worsening with duration (review, PMC4317303). Abnormalities in beta-cell function are therefore critical in defining risk. PMID 17167471 · PMC4317303
It increases Insulin sensitivity.
insulin, fasting insulin, type 2 diabetes and blood lipids share one literature: heart, kidney, liver, and metabolic diseases share interlinked pathological mechanisms, including inflammation, oxidative stress, insulin resistance, and endothelial health issues. These four overlap by nature: fasting insulin is the level, insulin is the signaling, type 2 diabetes is the diagnosis and blood lipids are the substrate. The same driver legitimately reaches all four, and a reader should not mistake four arrows for four independent findings. doi 10.1038/s41581-026-01066-0 · PMC11725408

It reduces Type 1 diabetes.
Beta-cell loss is the disease, not a risk factor for it. Verbatim: type 1 is 'a chronic autoimmune disease caused by progressive selective destruction of pancreatic beta-cells producing insulin' (doi 10.3390/nu11092158). The link runs inversely: preserved beta-cell mass means less type 1 - the residual-secretion 'honeymoon' phase is exactly this edge. doi 10.3390/nu11092158
It increases Insulin production marker.
10.1007/s13300-017-0265-4 — C-peptide is co-secreted with insulin in equimolar amounts, so it reads surviving beta-cell function directly. The Novara cohort measured exactly this as 'residual endogen insulin secretion (REIS)' during the honeymoon phase (doi 10.3390/nu11092158). C-peptide reflects function, not cell count - a stressed but living beta cell can under-secrete. doi 10.1007/s13300-017-0265-4
