Default mode network
DMN–task-positive anticorrelation
Also searched as DMN–task-positive anticorrelation.
The network itself is not a fault. What matters is whether it attenuates on cue. Failure to step aside is what shows up as mind-wandering and lapses.
In depth
How well the brain's inward-facing default network stands down when a task begins — measured as anticorrelation with the task-positive networks.

in patients, drug-naive, with a behavioral correlate: in 42 stimulant-drug-naive boys newly diagnosed with ADHD, performing a continuous performance task before and 90 minutes after a methylphenidate dose, METHYLPHENIDATE ROBUSTLY reversed the transient functional connectivity increase seen pre-medication to a post-medication decrease — and methylphenidate-induced reductions in individual reaction time were correlated with corresponding reductions in functional connectivity. The brain change tracked the behavior change, subject by subject. And it replicates: on-versus-off stimulant imaging showed greater suppression of ventral anterior and posterior cingulate DMN nodes on medication, and a systematic review states that all studies demonstrated that METHYLPHENIDATE treatment results in a suppression of the DMN, suggesting a potential mechanism of action. Now the inversion, and it is the most important line on this edge: in 59 healthy individuals in a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study, METHYLPHENIDATE increased time in the default mode network state (p<0.001), alongside increased time in the dorsal attention state. The same drug suppresses the DMN in diagnosed patients and increases time in it in healthy people. That is why adhd and focus ARE separate nodes here and why neither inherits the other's evidence: the population is not a detail of the study design, it is part of the finding. A mechanism established in patients does not transfer to a healthy user, and this is the cleanest demonstration of that on the whole map. PMC5167011
Memory chemical increases it.
The question was whether cholinergic tone gates default-mode suppression or merely runs alongside it. It gates. Chemogenetic and causal: DREADDs were used to selectively increase cholinergic activity in the rat basal forebrain with resting-state fMRI before and after, and unilateral activation of right basal forebrain cholinergic neurons produced decreased INTRA- and interhemispheric functional connectivity in the default mode like network. A modeling paper states the relationship in its title: cholinergic modulation supports dynamic switching of resting state networks through selective DMN suppression. And the basal forebrain behaves like the network it modulates: BF neurons show robust activity suppression when animals transition from rest to a novel task environment — mirroring the DMN deactivation seen in humans during externally focused tasks — and BF signaling drives medial frontal cortex activity, especially during rest. Human 7-TESLA fMRI mapped BF involvement across both DMN deactivation and DMN engagement states. This completes a chain already half-drawn here: the Cholinergic → Sustained Attention link is the permissive arm (cue detection, letting networks connect) and the Default Mode Suppression → Sustained Attention link is about attenuation on CUE. This edge shows they are the same act seen at two levels — the cholinergic signal that permits task engagement is the signal that stands the default network down. Two complications recorded: unilateral stimulation produced differential effects between the two hemispheres, so this is not a uniform global dial; and the basal forebrain has itself been suggested to be an inherent part of the DMN, which blurs modulator and member. What it drives
It reduces Attention regulation.
PMC11325164 — Beyond chemistry (transporters, catecholamines), network timing. The default mode interference hypothesis proposes that inattentiveness in ADHD may be caused by insufficient down-regulation of the default mode network during goal-oriented processes — the inward-facing network fails to stand down when a task begins, and reduced suppression may disrupt task-positive networks and lead to lapses of attention and excessive mind-wandering. Mega-analysis of multiple large samples, with the drug confound excluded: ADHD diagnosis was associated with less anticorrelation between the default mode and the dorsal attention (d=0.17, p-FDR<0.001), SALIENCE/VENTRAL attention (d=0.14) and SOMATOMOTOR (d=0.14) networks — and these results were robust to sensitivity analyses considering comorbid internalizing problems, externalizing problems and PSYCHOSTIMULANT medication. Not a medication artefact. The effect sizes ARE small and must travel with the d = 0.14 to 0.17, and for ADHD traits the largest was partial-r = 0.06. Statistically robust across big samples; nowhere near a diagnostic. And the direction is disputed: studies ARE inconsistent about whether ADHD shows hyperconnectivity OR hypoconnectivity of the DMN — which is why this edge is drawn on the anticorrelation (the failure to attenuate) rather than on connectivity magnitude. It increases Sustained focus.
In non-clinical subjects, reduced deactivation of the precuneus — the posterior default mode hub — preceded attentional lapses during a goal-oriented task (Weissman 2006). Two independent literatures, two different methods, same sequence: the brain disengages before the person notices. the dmn is not a fault to be suppressed — it is active at rest by design and the measure that matters is whether it attenuates on cue, which is why this edge is drawn on suppression and not on the network.
