In mouse liver, icariin turned up the genes for Acox1, Ech1 and Ehhadh, three enzymes of the peroxisome's fat-burning pathway, acting as a PPAR-alpha activator.
Epimedium's prenylated flavonoid lifts renal antioxidant defense, calms NF-kB inflammation, and holds back the TGF-beta signal that drives scarring.
Horny goat weed's flavonol blocks TGF-beta, the signal that tells a follicle growth is over, and so lets each strand keep lengthening.
Icariin does block PDE5, the enzyme sildenafil was built to block, in laboratory testing.
No experiment has yet blocked one of those steps to show which carries the effect — and it repeats what Epimedium already brings.
