Semantic knowledge retrieval

A subdomain of learning and memory: knowing something without remembering learning it. Tulving's distinction — semantic retrieval feels like knowing, episodic like remembering. Its dependence on the hippocampus is actively debated.
What drives it
Unprompted recall increases it.
The learning deficit is most striking in tasks that require rapid learning and free recall, supporting the notion that the hippocampus is critical for rapid and efficient semantic learning, whereas…. PMC6993580
The Story Of Your Life increases it.
23536058 — Inter-individual variation in the microstructure of the fornix (the main hippocampal input/output pathway) related to the amount of episodic, but not semantic, detail in AMs – independent of memory age. PMC5576916
Word retrieval increases it.
A reliably strong correlation between naming and knowing confers significant inference to naming ability. If indeed anomia observed in progressive aphasia is predominantly characterized by semantic…. PMC6797589
Object recognition increases it.
Visual agnosia is a deficit of object recognition addressed to the damage of the ventral stream (VS). The dorsal stream (DS) is usually intact in these patients, and it can be derived from well-preserved…. PMC11862234
What it drives
It increases Learning & memory.
The DSM-5 Neurocognitive Work Group agreed on six principal domains of cognitive function, each with subdomains. Learning and memory comprises immediate memory, recent memory (free recall, cued recall and recognition memory), and very-long-term memory including semantic, autobiographical and implicit learning. Taxonomic edge, not a causal mechanism: this is a DSM-5 domain/subdomain relationship, not a pathway acting on another. Sachdev 2014, Nat Rev Neurol 10:634-642 — Classifying neurocognitive disorders: the DSM-5 approach. doi 10.1038/nrneurol.2014.181 The manual's own table, which carries the immediate/recent nesting this line states, is reproduced verbatim as 'Immediate memory, recent memory' in Table 1 of doi 10.1186/s13643-019-1220-4 (Domains used to diagnose major and mild neurocognitive disorders in the DSM-5). Scope stated before anyone asks: Sachdev's Figure 2 is an ABRIDGED rendering of the DSM-5 table and does not carry every subdomain named here, so the manual's own wording is cited beside it. doi 10.1038/nrneurol.2014.181
It increases Living independently.
10.3389/fnagi.2015.00139 — Major neurocognitive disorder is diagnosed when cognitive decline interferes with independence in everyday activities; the DSM-5 functional criterion was revised so the threshold emphasizes loss of independence in daily living. Sachdev 2014, Nat Rev Neurol 10:634-642 — Classifying neurocognitive disorders: the DSM-5 approach. doi 10.1038/nrneurol.2014.181 That criterion is stated of the cognitive deficits COLLECTIVELY, as the mild-versus-major threshold - it does not attribute loss of independence to this one subdomain, so the arrow is carried by its own study: 'Language/semantic memory was related only to the correct use of the telephone (p = 0.014)'. doi 10.3389/fnagi.2015.00139

The core cognitive deficits in patients with SD typically manifest with reduced expressive and receptive vocabulary, anomia, impaired confrontation naming and single-word comprehension, object recognition/use. Verbatim from the source for this edge — PMC6493106. PMID 21038218 · PMC6493106

It increases Social cognition.
Social and non-social measures both loaded heavily on the same semantic memory component, and scores on this factor were uniquely associated with bilateral ATL gray matter volume but not with the degree of ATL asymmetry... both social- and non-social-semantic knowledge degrade in FTD (semantic dementia and behavioral variant FTD) following bilateral ATL atrophy.
