Accessibility

1What is built in

• Readable text. On phones, reading text is never smaller than 16 pixels, with generous line spacing. Documents like this one are set at 17 pixels and more.
• Light and dark. A light theme and a dark theme, one tap apart in the header.
• Less motion. When your device asks for reduced motion, the Site’s celebrations and most of its animations stand still.
• Spoken announcements. Moments such as “All pathways covered” are announced to screen readers as they happen.
• Labeled documents. Our policies and answers open as labeled dialogs with a contents list, and close with the Escape key or the close button.
• Everything in words. The pathway map, the constellations and the star signatures are drawings. The pathways, ingredients, grades and studies they show are also written out in each blend’s pop-up and in the full index at the foot of the home page.

2Where we are still working

• The interactive pathway map is visual and works best with a mouse or a touch screen. What it shows is available in words, as described above.
• The studies we cite open on journal and database websites that we do not control, and their accessibility varies.
• Some study summaries still use technical language. We are rewriting them in plain English.

3How we check

We review the Site against WCAG 2.2 AA as we build it. Automated checks run on every version, and every change is looked at on a phone and on a computer before it is published.
