Mitochondrial membrane lipid
Cardiolipin
Also searched as Cardiolipin.
Its oxidation is the signal. Cardiolipin holds the respiratory complexes in place and anchors cytochrome c; when it is oxidized, cytochrome c is released and externalised cardiolipin marks the mitochondrion for mitophagy. Damage to this one lipid is simultaneously the apoptosis trigger and the disposal tag.
In depth
The signature phospholipid of the inner mitochondrial membrane, required for the respiratory chain to assemble. It oxidizes readily, and that oxidation is an early event in mitochondrial failure.
What drives it
Oxidative stress reduces it.
Cardiolipin is a preferential oxidation target of mitochondrial ROS. Carried by the intermediary-metabolism, micronutrient and redox reviews. doi 10.3390/nu18132141 · PMC9967593
What it drives
It increases Mitochondrial energy.

It reduces Cell turnover.
Its oxidation is the signal - oxidized cardiolipin releases cytochrome c, which is the intrinsic apoptosis trigger. Carried by the intermediary-metabolism, micronutrient and redox reviews. doi 10.3390/nu18132141 · PMC9967593

Externalised cardiolipin marks the mitochondrion for disposal. Damage to one lipid is both the death trigger and the disposal tag. Carried by the intermediary-metabolism, micronutrient and redox reviews. doi 10.3390/nu18132141 · PMC9967593
