Hyperuricemia is the major aetiological factor in gout: MSU crystals form once serum urate exceeds saturation (>6.8 mg/dL) and deposit in joints. Scope, stated by those same sources: gout affects only about one third of people with hyperuricemia, most hyperuricaemic patients never have a flare, and hyperuricemia alone is not sufficient for diagnosis -- MSU crystals or tophi must be observed. Urate is necessary, not sufficient.
