Fat cell differentiation
C/EBPα↓
Also searched as C/EBPα.
A precursor cell becomes a white fat cell only when C/EBP-alpha switches on alongside PPAR-gamma; it is required for white fat tissue to form. Turning it down holds back the making of new fat cells.
In depth
C/EBP-alpha — the transcription factor that works with PPAR-gamma to commit a precursor cell to becoming a fat cell.
What drives it
Blocks new fat cells increases it.
C/EBPβ and C/EBPδ induce low levels of PPARγ and C/EBPα, which are then able to induce each other’s expression in a positive feedback loop that promotes and maintains the differentiated state. PMC155311

C/EBPα is required for differentiation of white, but not brown, adipose tissue. doi 10.1073/pnas.211416898
