Serum urate — circulating uric acid, whose oxidative and crystal burden falls on the joints and kidneys when it runs high.

The published urate numbers are treatment targets measured in patients with diagnosed gout already on urate-lowering therapy. They are not a general-population reference interval, and no qualifying one could be retrieved, so no number is held against yours here.

Hyperuricemia is the major aetiological factor in gout: MSU crystals form once serum urate exceeds saturation (>6.8 mg/dL) and deposit in joints. Scope, stated by those same sources: gout affects only about one third of people with hyperuricemia, most hyperuricaemic patients never have a flare, and hyperuricemia alone is not sufficient for diagnosis -- MSU crystals or tophi must be observed. Urate is necessary, not sufficient.
