Prostaglandin F2-alpha

Prostanoid F-series signaling

The Prostaglandin That Pulls The Other Way

The prostaglandins do not agree with each other, and that is the point of putting this pathway beside PGD2. One family, two directions: PGD2 is elevated in balding scalp and shortens the cycle, while PGF2-alpha analogs induce anagen in resting follicles and lengthen it. The clinical signal arrived by accident — glaucoma patients on latanoprost grew eyelashes on the treated side only — and bimatoprost is now FDA-approved for exactly that. On the scalp a randomized double-blind trial applied latanoprost to one zone and placebo to another on the same head, and density rose on the treated side. Two things must travel with all of it. These are prescription drugs applied to skin, not anything you can swallow. And despite thirty years of clear signals, NO prostaglandin drug is approved for scalp hair loss — the evidence is suggestive and it has stayed suggestive.

In depth

Prostaglandin F2-alpha. The same chemical family as PGD2, which suppresses hair — and it does the opposite. Its analogs are the glaucoma drops whose most famous side effect was that patients' eyelashes grew longer and thicker.

What drives it

Inflammatory fat substrate increases it.

PGF2-alpha is an arachidonic-acid-derived prostanoid, formed from the COX pathway like every other prostaglandin including PGD2, like PGD2. Supplying the upstream so the shared origin of the opposing prostaglandins is visible: PGD2 and PGF2-alpha pull in opposite directions on hair from the same precursor pool. canonical biosynthesis, not an effect size, and no claim about any intervention shifting the ratio. What it drives

It increases Hair.

The counterweight to PGD2, and it is human-evidenced. Topical latanoprost (a PGF2-alpha analog) significantly increased overall hair density and the number of vellus and terminal hairs versus both baseline and the placebo-treated area on the same scalp, in an intra-individual randomized double-blind design in men with Hamilton II-III androgenetic alopecia. A second randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial in scalp alopecia areata significantly raised hair density. Mechanism: prostaglandin analogs induce anagen in telogen follicles — the growth phase itself, which is why the effect is on cycle duration rather than on a hair already present. Bimatoprost 0.03% is FDA-approved for eyelash hypotrichosis, the only prostaglandin analog approved for any hair indication. This pathway exists so the prostaglandin picture is not one-sided, not so a plant can borrow A drug. Latanoprost and bimatoprost are prescription drugs, every trial is topical, no prostaglandin-pathway drug is approved for scalp hair loss, and NO botanical has been shown to act at this receptor in a human trial. T5 bars non-oral at any tier, so this can never grade an ingestible driver. It reduces Pattern hair loss.

The pilot AGA trial is the direct evidence that a PGF2-alpha analog opposes the condition itself rather than only raising a hair count: density and both vellus and terminal hair rose against the placebo minizone on the same head. n=16, described by its own authors as a pilot, and no prostaglandin-pathway drug has ever been approved for scalp hair loss.
