Vascular resistance
Blood pressure is flow multiplied by resistance. This pathway is resistance. Calcium entering smooth-muscle cells through L-type channels is the signal to contract; blocking that entry is why an entire drug class exists. It is worth being precise about what belongs here. A prescription calcium-channel blocker was removed from this formula because it is a drug, not a botanical. Celery seed reaches the same target as a food — and it is the only ingredient on this board that does. The honest limit: the clinical trial behind it is a triple-blind placebo-controlled crossover with 24-hour monitoring, which is strong — but the headline figures it reports are within-arm changes, and the active compound is an approved stroke drug in China. Both facts travel with the claim.
In depth
Calcium-channel mediated tone in vascular smooth muscle — how tightly the vessel wall grips.
What drives it
Vessel wall muscle increases it.
Cytosolic calcium in vascular smooth-muscle cells drives myosin light-chain kinase activity and sets contractile tone. PMID 21572007
Magnesium status reduces it.
Magnesium is a physiological calcium antagonist at vascular smooth-muscle L-type channels, lowering calcium-dependent tone. doi 10.1161/JAHA.118.009896
What it drives
It increases Blood pressure.
Vasoactive drugs have little direct effect on large human elastic arteries but can markedly modify wave reflection by altering stiffness of the muscular arteries and changing pulse wave velocity of the…. PMID 18401227
