In depth
A subdomain of perceptual-motor function: performing learned skilled movements. Lost in apraxia after left frontoparietal lesions — errors appear when demonstrating how objects are used, worst in pantomime.
What drives it
Hand-eye coordination increases it.
Praxis is a measured subdomain of perceptual-motor function. PMC6119712
What it drives
It increases Hand-eye coordination.
The DSM-5 Neurocognitive Work Group agreed on six principal domains of cognitive function, each with subdomains. Perceptual-motor function comprises visual perception, visuoconstructional reasoning, perceptual-motor coordination, praxis and gnosis. Taxonomic edge, not a causal mechanism: this is a DSM-5 domain/subdomain relationship, not a pathway acting on another. Sachdev 2014, Nat Rev Neurol 10:634-642 — Classifying neurocognitive disorders: the DSM-5 approach. doi 10.1038/nrneurol.2014.181 The manual's own table, which carries praxis and gnosis, is reproduced as 'perceptual-motor praxis gnosis' in Table 1 of doi 10.1002/alz.12365 (Harmonizing neuropsychological assessment for mild neurocognitive disorders in Europe), mapped onto the DSM-5 domains. Scope stated before anyone asks: Sachdev's Figure 2 is an ABRIDGED rendering of the DSM-5 table and does not carry every subdomain named here, so the manual's own wording is cited beside it. doi 10.1038/nrneurol.2014.181
It increases Living independently.
10.3389/fpsyg.2014.00353 — Major neurocognitive disorder is diagnosed when cognitive decline interferes with independence in everyday activities; the DSM-5 functional criterion was revised so the threshold emphasizes loss of independence in daily living. Sachdev 2014, Nat Rev Neurol 10:634-642 — Classifying neurocognitive disorders: the DSM-5 approach. doi 10.1038/nrneurol.2014.181 That criterion is stated of the cognitive deficits COLLECTIVELY, as the mild-versus-major threshold - it does not attribute loss of independence to this one subdomain, so the arrow is carried by its own study: 'These findings suggest that limb apraxia may adversely influence activities of daily living'. doi 10.3389/fpsyg.2014.00353
