Fat import gate
FATP1 fatty-acid transporter
Also searched as FATP1 fatty-acid transporter.
You want it open, because release without import is only relocation. Fat freed from storage has to enter a tissue that can burn it, and this is one of the named gates. The evidence is a loss experiment: animals lacking it in brown fat show measurably reduced ability to dissipate energy as heat. Losing the gate costs the burning.
In depth
A transporter that lets released fat into the tissue that will burn it.
What drives it
Blocks new fat cells increases it.
PPARgamma induces FATP1/SLC27A1 transcription in adipocytes. doi 10.1074/jbc.272.45.28210
Growth & survival signaling increases it.
Insulin signaling through PI3K-AKT translocates FATP1 to the plasma membrane to increase fatty-acid uptake. PMID 11970897
What it drives
It increases Fat burning.
'The loss of the integral transmembrane transporter FATP1 in murine brown fat also marks attenuation in dissipating metabolic energy as heat' (doi 10.3389/fphys.2022.826314). A loss experiment: remove the gate and the burning falls. Release without import is only relocation. doi 10.3389/fphys.2022.826314
