Wedelia Chinensis

Wedelia Chinensis is a type of flowering perennial plant which grows in the sub tropical regions and can grow to be up to 35 inches.

This plant’s leaves are said to be using for promoting hair growth and the juices of the leaves can be used for headaches, and skin problems. Wedelia Chinensis has a very high reputation within the Ayurvedic system and Traditional Chinese Medicine which can be found commonly in tropical countries as a fresh herb in their local markets.

All parts of Wedelia chinensis-trilobata plant, including roots, can be used fresh or dried. Internally this herb is usually taken in form of infusions or decoctions, but tinctures and pills are also made, for many common ailments and serious diseases.

Benefits of Wedelia Chinensis

Anti-CancerWedelia chinensis is a common ingredient of anti-inflammatory herbal medicines in Taiwan and southern China. Inflammation is involved in promoting tumor growth, invasion, and metastasis. This study aims to test the biological effects in vivo of W. chinensis extract on prostate cancer.Exposure of prostate cancer cells to W. chinensis extract induced apoptosis selectively in androgen receptor (AR)–positive prostate cancer cells and shifted the proportion in each phase of cell cycle toward G2-M phase in AR-negative prostate cancer cells.

Anticancer action of W. chinensis extract was due to three active compounds that inhibit the AR signaling pathway. Oral administration of W. chinensis extract impeded prostate cancer tumorigenesis.

Here it is reported that there are four anti-proliferative phytocompounds in Wedelia chinensis , an oriental herbal medicine, identified through their ability to modulate the androgen receptor (AR) activation of transcription from prostate-specific antigen promoter in PCa cells.

The study has identified synergistic effects of active compounds in W. chinensis and demonstrated their potential in PCa prevention and therapy.

Wedelia chinensis has at least three active compounds, wedelolactone, luteolin, and apigenin synergistically inhibiting prostate cancer cell growth in vitro.

In this study it is reportd a systematic study to develop a standardized and effect-optimized herbal extract, designated as W. chinensis extract (WCE) to facilitate its future scientific validation and clinical use.

Healing Wounds – The wound healing efficacy of ethanolic leaf extract of Wedelia chinensis was evaluated in excision, incision and dead space wound models. The parameters studied include rate of wound contraction, period of complete epithelialization, tensile strength of incision wound and, granulation tissue dry weight.

Its ethanolic extract was found to possess significant wound healing activity, which was evidenced by decrease in the period of epithelialization, increase in the rate of wound contraction, skin breaking strength, granulation tissue dry weight, and its breaking strength.
The present study has demonstrated that the ethanolic extract of
Wedelia chinensis leaves has properties that render it capable of promoting accelerated wound healing activity compared with placebo controls.

Antioxidant – The present investigation was to evaluate the effects of essential oils of Wedelia chinensis (Osbeck) on free radicals and in vivo antioxidant properties.

In all the in vitro assays, a significant correlation existed between the concentrations of the essential oil and percentage inhibition of free radicals. The in vivo studies also has shown a very good antioxidant property for the essential oil during cancer development.

From, these results the essential oil can be recommended for treating disease related to free radicals and to prevent cancer development.

Apoptosis – Wedelolactone (WDL), a medicinal plant-derived natural compound, is known to inhibit 5-Lox activity in neutrophils. However, its effect on apoptosis in prostate cancer cells has not been addressed. Thus, testing the effects of WDL on human prostate cancer cells in vitro. It was observed that WDL kills both androgen-sensitive as well as androgen-independent prostate cancer cells in a dose-dependent manner by dramatically inducing apoptosis.

These findings indicate that WDL selectivity induces caspase-dependent apoptosis in prostate cancer cells via a novel mechanism involving inhibition of PKCε without affecting Akt and suggest that WDL may emerge as a novel therapeutic agent against clinical prostate cancer in human.

Anti-Inflammatory – The objective of the study was to elucidate the anti-inflammatory effects and mechanism of WEL with a cellular model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW 264.7 cells.

The important pro-inflammatory transcription factors, NF-κB p65 and inhibitory kappaB alpha (IκB-α); and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), including extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and p38 MAPK (p38) were analyzed by Western blotting.

The results revealed that WEL has a potential to be a novel anti-inflammatory agent targeting on the NF-κB signaling pathway.
