Gotu Kola

Gotu Kola grows in the wetlands of Asia and is original found in Japan, China, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. It is a species of Apiaceae which are similiar to parsely, celery and carrots. It contains many nutrients that are utilized for it’s medicinal properties such as Vitamin B & C along with phytonutrients such as flavonoids, tannins and polyphenols. This plant can be made into gels, creams, supplements and ointments to treat anxiety and cardiovascular conditions. It has been known that gotu kola increases the potency of sex hormones, caffeine and THC.

Benefits of Gotu Kola

Skin Repair – A study conducted on animals found that when utilizing gotu kola on wounds atleast twice daily was able to increase antioxidant levels by 77 percent after seven days of use.It also resulted in a several fold decrease in lipid peroxide levels (69%) as measured in terms of thiobarbituric acid reactive substance. However, continued application for 14 days showed no significant difference in these antioxidants compared with their values in vehicle treated wound tissue. It appears from the present study that asiaticosides enhanced induction of antioxidant levels at an initial stage of healing which may be an important contributory factor in the healing properties of this substance.(Article)

Memory – A published study in the Journal of Alzhiemers Dieased was able to show an extract improved memory at the molecular level because it enhanced the pathways that are closely associated towards long-term memory formation.

Therefore, the present findings suggest the potential of Centella asiatica to attenuate the age-related decline in cognitive function and mood disorder in the healthy elderly. However, the precise mechanism(s) underlying these effects still require further investigation.

Reduce Inflammation – Gotu kola can assist with arthritis in mice. The present study aimed to investigate the therapeutic potential and underlying mechanisms of madecassoside on collagen II (CII)-induced arthritis (CIA) in mice. Madecassoside (10, 20 and 40mg/kg), orally administered from the day of the antigen challenge for twenty consecutive days, dose-dependently alleviated the severity of the disease based on the reduced clinical scores, and elevated the body weights of mice.

Kills Cancer Cells – A study found Gotu Kola effective in cell death for many strains of cancer cells, which did include breast cancer cells, mouse skin cells and rat brain cancer cells.

The AE had a promising activity against mouse melanoma (B16F1), human breast cancer (MDA MB-231) and rat glioma (C6) cell lines, with IC50 values of 698.0, 648.0 and 1000.0 μg/mL, respectively. A positive correlation was established between the level of flavonoids, antioxidant and antitumor activities.

Anxiety – A study conducted on rats was able to show a test which revealed that Gotukola, its methanol and ethyl acetate extracts as well as the pure asiaticoside, imparted anxiolytic activity. Furthermore, the asiaticoside did not affect locomotor activity, suggesting these compounds do not have sedative effects in rodents. These preliminary findings suggest that Gotu Kola has anxiolytic activity in humans as revealed by the ASR. It remains to be seen whether this herb has therapeutic efficacy in the treatment of anxiety syndromes.

Prevents Free Radical Damage – Because of the phenols contained in Gotu kola, it can provide anti tumor benefits in mouse cells. Hence, the results advocate that the current antioxidant and antitumor activity be justified by the high concentration of phenolic constituents, primarily the triterpene present in the C. asiatica.

Increases Serotonin, Dopamin and Lowers Cortisol -The antidepressant effect of total triterpenes of Centella asiatica may be involved in ameliorating the function of HPA axis and increasing the contents of monoamine neurotransmitters

Clears Herpes – A study was able to show it cleared herpes by inhibiting the herpes virus in test tube cultures. It was strong when combined with mango. Experimental assessments were made on the anti-HSV-II action of 500 herbs by determinations of the virus inhibition logarithm (VIL). 13 highly effective herbs (VIL greater than or equal to 4.00) were screened cut, providing a rational basis for clinical therapy.

Psoriasis – Gotu Kola inhibits skill cell reproduction. Which can be used a treatment for psoriasis. Psoriasis is a hyperproliferative skin disorder estimated to be present in 1-3% of most populations. Conventional therapy using corticosteroids, Vitamin D analogs and cytotoxic agents eg psoralens is associated with low success rate and many side effects. Traditional plant remedies may provide leads for new treatments. A rapid-throughput, in vitro bioassay has been utilised to examine plants for inhibitory effects on the growth of SVK-14 keratinocytes. Centella asiatica, a reputed anti-psoriatic herb, has been compared against the psoralen-containing seeds of Psoralea corylifolia and the synthetic anti-psoriatic agent dithranol (anthralin).
